UPDATED: The streaming service had been in negotiations with Fox Television Studios to get exclusive subscription VOD rights to the resurrected AMC hit show.

Netflix made it official on Thursday, confirming that it has reached a deal with News Corp.’s Fox Television Studios to bring the third season of AMC hit show The Killing to its members three months after the season finale.

The show is set to premiere on AMC later this year and will be available for Netflix’s streaming members in the U.S. and Canada three months after its airing in the U.S. "The deal makes Netflix the exclusive subscription television service for The Killing season 3," the company said.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Earlier this year, AMC and Fox Television Studios said they would bring back The Killing for a third season. Negotiations with Netflix for exclusive subscription VOD rights to the series were in the works when the return of the show was unveiled, but no deal was immediately announced back then.

AMC had cancelled the drama after two critically acclaimed seasons. The cable network was able to reduce its license fee considerably though, and Fox vowed to cut the show’s budget where possible, sources told THR when the deal for season three was unveiled. Netflix’s willingness to pay to get the latest season early was also part of the equation, Fox said Thursday.

"Our agreement with Netflix played an extremely significant part in the studio’s strategy that enabled us to bring The Killing back for a third season," said David Madden, president of Fox Television Studios. "We are delighted to be in business with Netflix to deliver season 3, as well as past seasons of The Killing to a broader audience worldwide."

"We’re excited to see The Killing back on TV and we’re especially proud to bring season 3 to our members so soon after it premieres on AMC," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix. "The Killing is a terrific serialized drama and we know our members love these high-quality shows."

The drama, based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen (The Crime), had focused on Seattle police detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) as they investigated the murder of a teenager. The third season tracks a new case. Veena Sud has remained on board as the showrunner.
