James Cameron is still writing the sequels.
"I’m deep into it, and I’m living in Pandora right now," Cameron revealed in an interview with the site Play Goes Strong. "There is that startup torque where you feel it’s coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That’s when it gets fun. The characters talk, and it’s writing itself. I’m almost there right now. It’s building fast."

The director behind the 2009’s has been dedicated to developing the film’s two scheduled sequels. While fans have been waiting for a chance to visit the world of Pandora again, Cameron admitted constructing the follow-up to the highest-grossing film of all time doesn’t just happen overnight.
"It’s a little daunting because sequels are always tricky," he explained. "You have to be surprising and stay ahead of audience anticipation."
Last year, while attending the premiere of , Cameron told reporters he hoped to have scripts for both and finished by February and for filming to begin by the end of this year. Clearly, that optimistic schedule isn’t on track.

Although Cameron previously promised to focus solely on his sequels — even going so far as to disband his production company’s development section two years ago — reported he had picked up , a novel by Taylor Stevens about a woman who works as an information dealer for the elite. That film won’t be released until production on both movies is finished.
As to when audiences might be able to see the first sequel, Cameron says he won’t delve into specifics until he’s discovered the direction his story will take. "As for a release date, that will be determined by when I get the script out."
