Steve Kornacki Replaces Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s ‘Up’

With Hayes moving to weeknights at 8 p.m., Kornacki will inherit his weekday morning program.

Steve Kornacki will replace Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s weekend morning program Up. The announcement came Tuesday from MSNBC president Phil Griffin.

“I give so much credit to the Up team who created appointment viewing on the weekends for us and some of the smartest conversations on television,” Griffin said in a statement. “Steve has a great political mind and his ability to connect with viewers made him a natural fit to continue driving that dialogue.”

Jonathan Larsen will continue as executive producer of the program, which airs Saturday and Sunday from 8-10 a.m. Hayes is moving to weeknights at 8 p.m. beginning April 1, inheriting the time slot occupied by Ed Schultz since fall 2011. Hayes, the former Washington editor of The Nation and currently an editor-at-large at the magazine, filled in often for Rachel Maddow and also is a regular contributor on Maddow’s show. His profile his risen quickly at MSNBC, where the network has shifted from bombast to a wonkier approach.

Like Hayes, Kornacki began at the network as a contributor and was elevated to a regular on-air role last year as one of the hosts of the afternoon show The Cycle. Kornacki also continues as a senior political writer for
